Wallets, not bank accounts
Start with the part that decides everything else. Grey does not pay into Ugandan bank accounts. The payout goes to a mobile money wallet on MTN Mobile Money or Airtel Money, and the only detail you need is the mobile number that wallet is registered to. If the person you support banks in Kampala and expects money in a bank account, this route will not do what you want, and it is better to know that now than at the confirmation screen.
For most recipients it is not a limitation at all. Mobile money is how ordinary Ugandan money moves: rent, fees, stock for a shop, a boda fare, a bag of cement. Agents are on every trading centre street in a way branches are not, and a wallet works on a basic handset in a village where a bank card would be useless.
The Canadian side of this corridor has more than one history behind it. Ugandan families settled in Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg over decades, and Canada also took in Ugandan Asian families expelled in 1972, many of whom kept business and family ties that still generate payments today. What sending to Uganda costs
There is a cost after Grey's that is worth planning around. Cashing out at an agent is charged by the network rather than by Grey, and what it comes to depends on the amount withdrawn. One larger transfer a month can therefore cost your family less at the agent than four small ones, even though the Grey side is unaffected by how you split it.
Compare on what lands, not on the fee line. A provider advertising no fee can deliver fewer shillings simply because the margin has been moved into the rate, and on a wallet payout there is no statement afterwards that will spell the difference out for you.
How the shilling rate is decided
The rate shown when you confirm is the rate applied to your transfer. It does not change while the payment travels from Winnipeg to Kampala and it is not revisited afterwards.
That is what lets you name an amount. When someone has told you what a term's fees or a month's rent comes to in shillings, you can send exactly that rather than a figure that needs topping up a week later.
A Canadian bank wire cannot reach a wallet
The comparison is unusual on this corridor, because a wire from Scotiabank, RBC, BMO or CIBC cannot reach a mobile wallet at all. It can only reach a Ugandan bank account, which then leaves your family with a trip to a branch, a queue and a withdrawal before the money is usable in a market. You also pay the flat wire fee whatever the amount and accept a rate the bank does not show you first, while Interac e-Transfer stops at the Canadian border. Grey pays shillings into the wallet the household already uses, with the rate and the fee visible beforehand.
