Send money to Bulgaria from Canada
A corridor that changed at the start of 2026
Until recently, sending money to Bulgaria meant thinking about the lev. It no longer does. Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026, and euro is what Bulgarian banks hold, quote and credit. Grey does not pay out in lev, and on this route that is not a limitation to work around. It is the ordinary way money arrives in the country now.
The people using it from Canada are mostly Bulgarian families who settled in Ontario, concentrated around Toronto, Mississauga and Etobicoke, with smaller groups in Calgary and Vancouver. A lot of that migration was skilled and relatively recent, which shows in what the transfers are for: a parent's pension topped up, a flat in Sofia being paid down, renovation work on a place near Varna, a nephew's tuition at a Bulgarian university.
Grey holds no Canadian dollar balance. You keep US dollars, provided by Lead Bank, pounds or euro, funded by money arriving from a client, an employer or your own transfer, and convert into euro when the Bulgarian payment is due.

The cost of a euro payment into Bulgaria
Euro adoption removed a step that used to cost Bulgarian recipients money. Where a transfer once arrived in one currency and had to become lev at the receiving bank's own rate, there is now a single conversion, it happens on your side in Canada, and you see the rate before you agree to it.
For payments that repeat, a monthly amount to a parent in Plovdiv or a quarterly instalment on a property, that single conversion is what makes the cost readable. The same two numbers appear each time, in the same place, before anything leaves your balance.

Why the rate stops moving when you confirm

Grey quotes live while you build the transfer and fixes the rate at the moment you confirm it. The euro figure you agreed to is the euro figure that arrives.
That is useful when the amount has been agreed with somebody else. A contractor quoting for renovation work near Varna, a university invoice in Sofia, a family member expecting a set sum: you can confirm the exact euro number before the transfer leaves, rather than explaining afterwards why it came in slightly short.
