Send money to Kenya from Qatar
A corridor that has outgrown its own description
The Kenyan workforce in Qatar used to be described in two words, security and hospitality, and that description is now out of date. It still covers the guard on a twelve hour shift at a compound gate in Al Wakrah and the waiter closing a hotel restaurant in West Bay. It no longer covers the accountant, the aviation technician, the nurse, the teacher at an international school or the project coordinator who came in on a professional contract and stayed.
What connects them is the payout side. Shillings land either on M-Pesa or in a bank account, and the choice is usually made by the person receiving rather than the person sending. A mother in Nyeri wants it on her phone. A college in Eldoret wants it in a bank account with a reference. Grey does both from the same balance.
Timing is the other shared thing. Kenyan households run on cycles the sender knows by heart: the January, May and September school terms, the monthly chama contribution, the SACCO deposit that has to land before the cut off. A transfer on this corridor is rarely spontaneous, which is why the rate on the day matters and why guessing at it is expensive.

The real cost of sending shillings home
There is a simple way to settle the argument. Take the amount you send at the end of each month, put it into two services, and write down only the shilling total each one says will arrive. Fees, margins and rounding are all inside that number already, so the larger total wins and nothing else needs debating.
Grey does not merge the two charges. The fee is shown as a fee, the rate is shown as a rate, and neither is revealed after the money has gone. For senders covering school fees, where the amount required is fixed and non negotiable, knowing the shilling total in advance is the difference between paying the term and paying most of it.

How the shilling rate is set and held

The shilling moves against the dollar on its own schedule, and the peg between the riyal and the dollar does nothing to insulate it. What Grey can do is tell you the rate before the transfer rather than after, with the fee next to it, while you still have the option of waiting.
Confirming fixes the rate. The shilling figure you agreed to is the figure that reaches the M-Pesa wallet or the bank account, even if the market turns while the transfer is settling. There is no later adjustment and no second message explaining why less arrived.
Senders who plan around fixed obligations use this deliberately. If a SACCO deposit is due on the fifteenth, you can watch the rate in the days before, send on the best of them, and still be certain of the amount that lands.
