Sending euro from Ireland to Bulgaria
A route that changed at the start of 2026
For years a payment from Ireland to Bulgaria meant sending euro into a lev country and leaving the recipient's bank to sort out the difference. That is over. Bulgaria joined the euro on 1 January 2026, so euro leaving an Irish account is the same currency the Bulgarian account is denominated in. There is no conversion in Dublin and none in Sofia.
The people using the route have not changed. Bulgarians working in Ireland, in food processing, haulage, hospitality and increasingly in software, send money home to Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and the towns in between. Running alongside them is a group of Irish property owners who bought in Bansko or on the Black Sea coast during the 2000s and still pay maintenance charges, local taxes and a builder now and again. There is also a steady flow of invoices from Irish firms to Bulgarian development teams.
Whichever of those you are, nothing is required of the person receiving it. What reaches UniCredit Bulbank, DSK Bank or Postbank Bulgaria is a euro credit on a euro account, described the way any local payment is.

Grey shows that fee beside the amount the Bulgarian account will receive, before you confirm. Because a SEPA credit is not an international wire, there is no correspondent bank in the chain taking a cut, and a maintenance charge on a flat in Bansko arrives at the figure the management company quoted.
If the money starts in another currency, dollars in your USD account provided by Lead Bank or pounds on your GBP balance, it converts once, in Ireland, at a rate fixed when you confirm. After that the euro figure is settled.

Why there is nothing left to convert

With Bulgaria in the euro, the payment has one currency from end to end. The amount you type in Dublin is the amount credited in Sofia. The recipient's bank has no conversion to perform, no spread to apply and no reason to hold the payment while it decides on a rate.
That is worth saying plainly, because several countries in central and eastern Europe still work the other way. A euro payment into Poland or Romania arrives as euro and the recipient's own bank converts it into zloty or leu if they want local currency. Bulgaria left that arrangement behind on 1 January 2026.
Where you are converting from dollars or pounds first, that single conversion is fixed at the moment you confirm, and the euro figure does not move between Dublin and Sofia.

Why this route works well from Ireland
This corridor used to need a paragraph of caveats. Euro went to a lev country, the recipient's bank did the conversion, and what landed depended on a rate neither of you had seen.
