How to Pay for ChatGPT Plus in Nigeria

ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month. The first problem for most Nigerians is that OpenAI does not accept naira-denominated debit cards, which means your standard Nigerian bank card will be declined at checkout every time.

The solution is a virtual dollar card. With a Grey account, you can create one in minutes and complete the ChatGPT Plus subscription on the same day. This guide covers the full process: what you are paying for, how much it costs in naira, how to set up your Grey card, and exactly how to complete the subscription on desktop and mobile.

What is ChatGPT Plus?

ChatGPT is the AI assistant developed by OpenAI and launched in November 2022. The free version gives you access to a limited version of OpenAI’s models with lower message caps and slower responses during busy periods.

ChatGPT Plus is OpenAI’s paid subscription tier at $20 per month. It gives you significantly more capability across every dimension of the product.

ChatGPT Plus vs Free: what you actually get

Feature Free Plus
GPT-5.5 Instant (standard model) Limited access Expanded access
GPT-5.5 Thinking (reasoning model) Not available Expanded access
Message limits Limited Expanded
Response speed Limited by demand Fast
Voice conversations Yes (basic) Expanded
Voice with video No Yes
Image generation Limited Yes (including with Thinking)
File uploads and data analysis Limited Yes
Deep research and agent mode Limited Expanded
Custom GPT creation No Yes
Tasks and scheduled actions No Yes
Apps connecting to internal tools No Yes
Early access to new features No Yes
Context window (Instant model) 27K tokens (about 12 pages) 54K tokens (about 40 pages)
Price Free $20 per month

Is there a higher-tier plan?

Yes. Above Plus, OpenAI offers ChatGPT Pro at $100 per month (billed in GBP on the UK pricing page; USD equivalent applies for Nigerian users). Pro gives you five to twenty times more usage than Plus, access to GPT-5.5 Pro (the most powerful version), unlimited image generation, maximum deep research and agent mode, and a research preview of new features before they reach Plus.

For most Nigerian users, Plus at $20 per month covers everything. Pro is designed for power users who hit Plus usage limits regularly.

OpenAI does not currently offer annual billing for ChatGPT Plus or Pro. All plans are billed monthly.

How much does ChatGPT Plus cost in naira?

OpenAI charges $20 per month, billed in USD. The naira equivalent shifts with the exchange rate. At typical market rates, $20 works out to roughly N25,000 to N30,000 per month. Verify the current rate in the Grey app before subscribing, since this changes daily.

Because the charge is in USD and your Grey card operates in USD, there is no currency conversion on the ChatGPT transaction itself. You only pay the Grey FX swap fee once, when you convert naira to USD to fund your account.

Why do Nigerian naira cards not work for ChatGPT subscription?

OpenAI processes all payments in USD through Stripe, its payments processor. Stripe requires a card with a valid USD billing relationship. Nigerian naira debit cards issued by local banks are naira-denominated and do not meet this requirement, so they are declined at the payment step regardless of your card balance.

This is not a Grey-specific issue. Any naira card, whether issued by GTBank, Access, Zenith, UBA, First Bank, or any other Nigerian bank, will be declined. The only cards that work are dollar-denominated Visa or Mastercard cards, either physical (from a domiciliary account) or virtual (such as Grey’s virtual dollar card).

OpenAI also does not accept PayPal on the web checkout, gift cards, or prepaid cards without a matching billing address. Apple Pay and Google Pay work on mobile apps only, and only if your Apple or Google account is linked to a valid dollar payment method.

What you need before you subscribe

  • A Grey account (download the Grey app from the App Store or Google Play and complete signup)
  • A Grey virtual dollar card
  • A ChatGPT account, which is free to create at chatgpt.com

Step 1: Create a Grey account

If you already have a Grey account, skip to Step 2.

  1. Download the Grey app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android).
  2. Open the app and tap Sign Up.
  3. Enter your email address and create a password.
  4. Complete identity verification. Grey requires a valid government-issued ID to comply with financial regulations.
  5. Your account is active once verification is approved.

Step 2: Get a Grey virtual dollar card

If you already have a Grey virtual card, skip to Step 3.

  1. Open the Grey app and tap the Cards section on the dashboard.
  2. Select Create Virtual Card.
  3. Review the card creation fee. A $5 one-time creation fee will be charged. You need a minimum of $5 USD in your account before creating the card.
  4. Confirm, and your card is created immediately. Your card number, expiry date, and CVV appear in the Cards section of the app.

Your Grey virtual dollar card is a Visa card which pulls directly from your USD balance. It’s accepted anywhere Visa is supported internationally, including on ChatGPT and on every major USD-billed subscription platform.

Step 3: Fund your Grey USD balance

You need at least $20 in your USD balance to pay for ChatGPT Plus. The recommended method is to swap naira to USD inside the Grey app.

  1. Open the Grey app and tap “Convert”.
  2. Select NGN to USD and enter the amount. A 1% currency conversion fee (capped at $6) will apply.
  3. Review the rate and confirm. Your USD balance updates immediately.

You can also fund your USD balance via ACH transfer from a US bank account if you have one. The ACH receiving fee is 0.5% (minimum $2, maximum $10). For most Nigerian users, the in-app naira-to-USD swap is the most straightforward route.

Step 4: Subscribe to ChatGPT plus

On a desktop browser (recommended)

  • Go to chatgpt.com and log into your account.
  • Click your profile icon in the bottom-left corner.
  • Select Upgrade Plan.
  • Choose the Plus plan at $20 per month.
  • On the payment screen, enter your Grey virtual card number, expiry date, and CVV. Use the name on your Grey account and any valid billing address.
  • Click Subscribe. Your subscription activates immediately, and $20 is charged to your Grey card balance.

On Android

  • Open the ChatGPT app and go to Settings.
  • Select Upgrade to Plus.
  • Payment is processed through Google Play. Add your Grey virtual card as a payment method on Google Play before proceeding if you have not already done so.

On iOS

  • Open the ChatGPT app and tap the menu at the top.
  • Select Get Plus.
  • Payment goes through Apple’s in-app purchase system. Add your Grey card to your Apple ID payment methods first. You can do this in iPhone Settings under your Apple ID, then Payment and Shipping.

Payment methods: what works and what does not

Method Works? Notes
Grey virtual dollar card (Visa) Yes Recommended. Works on web, Android, and iOS.
Physical dollar card (domiciliary) Yes Works, but requires sourcing USD separately through your bank.
Nigerian naira debit card No OpenAI does not accept naira-denominated cards on any platform.
PayPal Not on web Works on iOS or Android only if PayPal is linked to your Apple or Google account.
Gift cards No OpenAI does not accept gift cards for ChatGPT subscriptions.
Annual billing No OpenAI currently offers monthly billing only for Plus and Pro.

How to manage your ChatGPT subscription

To view your subscription details, invoices, or cancel your plan, log into chatgpt.com, click your profile icon, select Settings, then Account.

To cancel, go to Manage My Subscription and select Cancel Plan. Cancelling stops the next renewal charge. Your Plus access continues until the end of the billing period you have already paid for.

If you subscribed through the iOS app, manage and cancel through iPhone Settings, then your Apple ID, then Subscriptions. The same applies to Android subscriptions managed through Google Play.

What happens at renewal?

ChatGPT Plus renews automatically every month on the same date you first subscribed. OpenAI charges your Grey card for $20 on that date.

If your Grey USD balance is below $20 at renewal time, the charge will fail, and your account will be downgraded to the free plan. You will need to top up your balance and resubscribe. To avoid this, set a reminder to check your Grey balance a few days before each renewal date, or keep a small buffer in your USD balance above the $20 threshold.

OpenAI sends a receipt by email for each billing cycle. If you see an unexpected charge, you can request a refund through OpenAI’s support. Refunds are typically processed within five to ten business days after approval.

Troubleshooting common issues

Payment declined at checkout

  • Check that your Grey USD balance has at least $20 available.
  • Confirm that the card number, expiry date, and CVV are entered correctly from the Grey app.
  • Make sure the billing name matches the name on your Grey account.
  • If using a billing address, use a consistent format. Grey’s registered address works.
  • If the issue persists, contact Grey support through the app.

Subscribed but account still shows “free plan”

  • Log out of ChatGPT on all devices and log back in using the exact email address you used to subscribe.
  • If you subscribed through Apple and used Hide My Email, find the private relay address in your Apple ID settings and use that to sign in.
  • On iOS or Android, go to Settings and tap Restore Purchases to sync your subscription.
  • If none of these work, contact OpenAI support with your receipt or the last four digits of the card charged.

Grey card not accepted on Google Play or Apple

  • On Google Play: go to pay.google.com, add your Grey card as a new payment method, then return to the ChatGPT app to subscribe.
  • On Apple: go to iPhone Settings, tap your name, then Payment and Shipping, and add your Grey card. Once added, it will be available for in-app purchases.

Other USD subscriptions you can pay with your Grey card

Once your Grey virtual dollar card is set up, it works across every major USD-billed subscription platform. You do not need to create a new card for each service.

Service What you can pay for
Adobe Creative Cloud Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, Acrobat, the full Creative Cloud suite
Notion AI Notion Plus and AI add-on plans
Canva Pro Canva Pro monthly and annual plans
Spotify Premium Spotify individual and family plans billed in USD
Netflix Netflix plans billed in USD
AWS Amazon Web Services usage and reserved instance billing
Shopify Shopify Basic, Grow, and Advanced plans

GitHub Copilot GitHub Copilot Individual and Business plans
Midjourney Midjourney AI image generation plans

The smart way to manage dollar subscriptions from Nigeria

A Grey multi-currency account lets you hold a USD balance and spend it directly with a virtual dollar card across all of the above. One account, one card, no currency conversion at the point of payment on any USD-billed service. You convert naira to USD once, at Grey’s 1% rate, and spend from that balance across every subscription you run.

If you also send money internationally, Grey pays out to bank accounts and mobile money in Nigeria, India, Ghana, Kenya, the Philippines, and over 50 other destinations. You can manage everything from one app.

Open a Grey account, create your virtual dollar card, and have ChatGPT Plus running today at grey.co.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT Plus renew automatically?

Yes. OpenAI charges your card $20 on the same date each month. Make sure your Grey USD balance has at least $20 before each renewal date to avoid the payment failing and your account reverting to free.

Is there a transaction fee when ChatGPT charges my Grey card?

No fee on the card transaction itself. ChatGPT charges in USD, and your Grey card operates in USD, so no currency conversion happens at the point of payment.

What if my card balance is too low at renewal?

OpenAI will attempt the charge. If it fails, your account is downgraded to the free plan. Top up your Grey USD balance and re-subscribe. OpenAI does not automatically retry failed payments, so you need to go back into the subscription flow to reactivate.

Can I use one Grey card for multiple subscriptions?

Yes. Your Grey virtual card is a standard Visa card. Use it for ChatGPT Plus, Adobe, Notion, Canva, AWS, Shopify, and any other USD-billed service simultaneously. There is no limit on the number of services you can subscribe to from one card.

Does the 2% cross-border card fee apply to ChatGPT?

No. The 2% plus $0.50 cross-border card fee applies only when a merchant processes a transaction in a currency other than USD. ChatGPT Plus is billed in USD, so you pay no cross-border fee on this subscription. The same applies to any other service that charges in USD.

Can I get a refund if I cancel ChatGPT Plus?

OpenAI does not automatically refund unused time if you cancel mid-cycle. If you believe you were incorrectly charged, you can submit a refund request through OpenAI’s support pages. Refunds typically take five to ten business days to process after approval.’

Is there a ChatGPT Go plan below Plus?

Yes. OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Go at $7 per month (GBP equivalent on the UK pricing page). Go gives you more access than Free, including more messages and uploads, longer memory, and the ability to create and share custom GPTs. It does not include GPT-5.5 Thinking, deep research tools, or tasks. Go is a middle-ground option if $20 per month is too much. You can pay for it with your Grey card using the same process described in this guide.

Is ChatGPT data private on Plus?

OpenAI may use conversations to improve model performance and safety on all individual plans including Plus. You can opt out of having your data used for training at any time through Settings in your ChatGPT account. Business and Enterprise plans do not use data for training by default.

Claude AI subscription pricing: pro, max and team plans compared for 2026

•

•

2 min read

If you are weighing up Claude’s subscription options, pricing is usually the first question. Claude plans range from free to $200 per month, and the right choice depends on how often you use it and whether usage limits are getting in the way of your work.

This guide covers every Claude plan and what each one costs in 2026. It also covers how to pay from Nigeria, India, Ghana, or any country where a local bank card may be declined or marked up on a USD-priced checkout. A Grey virtual card funded in USD handles that cleanly.

All pricing below is sourced from Anthropic’s official pricing page and plan documentation. Verify on claude.ai/pricing before subscribing, as prices are subject to change.

Claude plans at a glance

Plan Monthly price Annual price Usage vs Free Best for
Free $0 $0 Base usage Light personal use
Pro $20/month $17/month ($200/year) 5x more than Free Everyday productivity
Max 5x $100/month Monthly only 5x more than Pro Frequent heavy users
Max 20x $200/month Monthly only 20x more than Pro Daily intensive use
Team (Standard) $25/seat/month $20/seat/month 1.25x more than Pro Teams of 5 or more
Team (Premium) $125/seat/month $100/seat/month 6.25x more than Pro Power users in teams

Pricing and features are subject to change at Anthropic’s discretion. Verify current pricing at claude.ai/pricing.

Free plan

The Free plan is the right starting point if you want to try Claude before committing to a paid subscription. You get access to Claude on web, iOS, Android, and desktop, with the ability to search the web, generate code, write and edit content, create files, and use memory across conversations. Usage is limited compared to paid plans and you may encounter limits during busy periods.

The Free plan does not include Claude Code, Cowork, or Research. Most users who rely on Claude for work find the usage limits restrictive within a few days of regular use.

Pro plan: $20 per month

Pro is the right plan for most people who use Claude regularly for work. It gives you meaningfully more capacity than the Free plan and includes the full Claude toolkit. Monthly billing is $20 per month. The annual subscription brings that down to $17 per month, billed as $200 upfront.

Pro includes everything in the Free plan plus:

  • At least 5x more usage per session than the Free plan
  • Claude Code for terminal-based coding workflows
  • Claude Cowork and Claude Design
  • Access to all available Claude models
  • Access to Research
  • Unlimited projects for organising conversations and documents
  • Priority access during high-traffic periods
  • Early access to new features

Usage limits reset on a session basis (every five hours), and there is also a weekly usage limit across all models. If you regularly hit Pro limits, the Max plan is the next step.

Only credit and debit cards are accepted for Pro plan payments. Apple Pay is available via the iOS App Store, but adds approximately 30 percent to the subscription cost due to Apple’s platform fee.

Max plan: $100 or $200 per month

Max is for users who regularly push through Pro’s limits and need substantially more capacity. If you find yourself waiting for usage to reset or cutting work short because of limits, Max is the upgrade to consider. It comes in two tiers:

Tier Price Usage vs Pro Best for
Max 5x $100/month 5x more than Pro Frequent users who regularly hit Pro limits
Max 20x $200/month 20x more than Pro Daily intensive users who collaborate with Claude for most tasks

Team plan: from $20 per seat per month

The Team plan is the right choice when you need Claude across a group, with centralised billing and admin controls. It requires a minimum of five members and a maximum of 150. It includes all Pro features plus SSO, role-based permissions, and a 200k context window for longer documents and conversations.

Team plans offer two seat types:

Seat typeMonthly priceAnnual priceUsageStandard$25/seat/month$20/seat/month1.25x more per session than ProPremium$125/seat/month$100/seat/month6.25x more per session than Pro

Teams can mix Standard and Premium seats, assigning Premium to power users who need higher capacity. Usage limits are per-member, not shared across the team.

Enterprise plan

Enterprise is the right fit for larger organisations that need security controls, compliance features, and predictable usage-based billing. Unlike Team, the seat fee covers access only and all usage is billed separately at API rates, with no per-seat usage limits. Admins can set spend caps at the organisation and user level to manage costs.

Enterprise adds audit logs, SCIM, custom data retention, compliance and analytics APIs, customer-managed encryption keys, and US-only inference. Self-serve Enterprise requires a minimum of 20 seats. Sales-assisted Enterprise requires a minimum of 50 seats.

Enterprise pricing is not listed publicly. Refer to Anthropic’s pricing page or contact their Sales team for current rates.

Claude API billing

API access is separate from the consumer subscription plans. API usage is billed via prepaid credits, not a monthly subscription. You purchase credits in advance, and they are drawn down as you make API calls. Failed requests are not charged.

Credits expire one year from the purchase date and are non-refundable. Auto-reload can be set to purchase additional credits automatically when your balance falls below a defined threshold. API billing accepts credit and debit cards only.

How to pay for Claude from Nigeria, India, or Ghana

Claude’s payment page accepts major credit and debit cards in USD. For users in Nigeria, India, Ghana, and most emerging markets, two problems arise commonly:’

  • Your local bank card is declined on a foreign USD checkout
  • Your bank applies a foreign transaction fee of 2 to 5 percent on top of the listed price, making a $20 subscription cost $20.40 to $21

Pay with a Grey virtual card. Grey gives you a virtual card linked to your USD balance. When you subscribe to Claude Pro, Max, or any other USD-priced plan, the charge processes in USD from your Grey account. No foreign transaction markup from a Nigerian or Indian bank, no declined card on a foreign checkout. The card works on Anthropic’s payment page the same way a standard debit card does.

If you subscribe to the annual Pro plan, your Grey card handles the $200 charge in one transaction and renews automatically the following year.

Note: subscribing via the iOS App Store costs approximately 30 percent more due to Apple’s platform fee. The direct web subscription at claude.ai/upgrade is the most cost-effective route for most users.’

Frequently asked questions

How much does Claude Pro cost?

Claude Pro costs $20 per month on a monthly subscription, or $17 per month when billed annually ($200 per year). Prices are in USD and subject to change.

What is the difference between Claude Pro and Max?

Pro provides 5x more usage than the Free plan. Max 5x provides 5x more usage than Pro, and Max 20x provides 20x more usage than Pro. Max also includes higher output limits and earlier access to new features. Max is available at $100 per month (5x) or $200 per month (20x).

Can I pay for Claude with a Nigerian or Indian bank card?

Nigerian and Indian bank cards are sometimes declined on USD-priced foreign checkouts, and may apply a foreign transaction fee of 2 to 5 percent on successful transactions. A Grey virtual card funded in USD processes the payment without those issues.

Is there a free version of Claude?

Yes. Claude’s Free plan is available at claude.ai with no payment required. It includes access to Claude on web, iOS, Android, and desktop, with limited usage compared to paid plans.

Does Claude offer an annual discount?

Yes, for the Pro plan and Team Standard and Premium seats. Annual Pro billing costs $200 per year, equivalent to $17 per month, compared to $20 per month on a monthly basis. Max plans are currently available on monthly billing only.

Can I pay for Claude via Apple Pay or Google Pay?

Apple Pay is available when subscribing via the iOS App Store, but this route adds approximately 30 percent to the cost due to Apple’s platform fee. Anthropic’s direct web payment page accepts credit and debit cards only.

What is the cheapest way to subscribe to Claude from Nigeria?

Subscribe directly at claude.ai/upgrade on the annual Pro plan ($200 per year, $17 per month equivalent). Pay with a Grey virtual card funded in USD to avoid foreign transaction fees from a Nigerian bank card.

ACH, SWIFT, Wire and FedNow: What they are and when to use each

•

•

2 min read

When a US employer, freelance platform, or family member sends you money in USD, it travels through one of four networks: ACH, FedNow, Fedwire, or SWIFT. Each one works differently: different speeds, different fees, different routing numbers. Sharing the wrong one means the money either arrives late, costs more than it should, or, in rare cases, bounces back to the sender.

This guide explains how each method works, what it actually costs to receive, and exactly what to tell the person paying you.

If you already know which method your sender is using and just need your routing number, find it in your Grey app under your USD wallet > Account details. Your multi-currency account includes both an ACH routing number and a Fedwire routing number.

Quick comparison

Method Speed Grey receive fee Routing number Best for
ACH 1 to 2 business days 0.8% (min $2, max $10) ACH routing number Platform payouts, payroll, most US transfers
FedNow Real time (seconds) 0.8% (min $2, max $10) ACH routing number Instant USD when sender's bank supports it
Fedwire Same business day $20 flat Fedwire routing number Large or time-critical same-day payments
SWIFT 1 to 5 business days $25 Flat fee SWIFT/BIC code + account number International wires from outside the US banking system

All fee figures above are subject to change. Verify current rates in your Grey app or from our support before sharing with a sender.

ACH transfers

ACH stands for Automated Clearing House. It is the backbone of US domestic payments, the network that processes direct deposits, payroll, and most platform payouts. If you receive money through Upwork, Fiverr, Amazon Payments, Deel, Remote, Payoneer, or a US employer's payroll system, you are almost certainly receiving it via ACH.

ACH processes in batches rather than in real time. Financial institutions collect payment requests throughout the day and send them to a clearing house at set intervals. This is why transfers take 1 to 2 business days to arrive. A payment sent on a Friday may not settle until Tuesday.

This batching process also makes ACH inexpensive to operate, which is why it carries a percentage fee rather than a large flat fee. At a $1,000 platform payout, the fee comes to $8. On a $100 payment, the minimum fee applies instead.

What to share with your sender for ACH

  • Account type: Checking
  • ACH routing number (from your Grey USD account under Account details)
  • Account number (from your Grey USD account)
  • Bank name (shown in your Grey account details)

If a platform asks for a 'bank account number and routing number' for direct deposit, the ACH routing number is what they mean.

ACH returns

ACH payments can be returned by the sending bank if the account details are incorrect, if the sender's account has restrictions, or if the sender's balance is insufficient. If an ACH return occurs, Grey will notify you, and the funds will return to the sender within 1 to 3 business days. The most common cause of returns is a mismatch between the name on the payment and the name on the account; check that your full legal name matches what your sender has on file.

FedNow

FedNow is the Federal Reserve's instant payment network, launched in July 2023. Unlike ACH, which processes in batches, FedNow settles each payment individually in real time, around the clock, every day, including weekends and public holidays. When a sender's bank supports FedNow, the money can appear in your Grey account within seconds.

Grey supports receiving USD via FedNow at the same fee as ACH. Whether a payment arrives via FedNow depends on the sender's bank; not all US banks have joined the network yet, but adoption has been growing steadily since launch. You do not need to ask specifically for FedNow; if the sender's bank supports it, it may be used automatically.

To receive via FedNow, share the same ACH routing number you would share for a standard ACH payment. The routing number is the same for both methods.

Fedwire

Fedwire (the Federal Reserve Wire Transfer System) is used for large, time-critical payments that need to settle the same business day. Property transactions, business settlements, and high-value employer payments sometimes come via Fedwire. It is faster than ACH for same-day settlement, but carries a flat fee regardless of the amount sent.

Fedwire transfers arrive on the same business day if submitted before the cut-off time, typically 5 PM Eastern Time. If submitted after the cut-off, the payment arrives the following business day.

The critical difference from ACH is that Fedwire might use a different routing number. If your sender uses the ACH routing number for a Fedwire payment, the transfer will not route correctly. Always confirm which method your sender is using before sharing your details.

What to share with your sender for Fedwire

  • Fedwire routing number (from your Grey USD wallet under Account details, different from the ACH number)
  • Account number (from your Grey USD wallet)
  • Bank name and bank address (shown in your Grey account details)
  • Beneficiary name: your full legal name as registered on Grey

SWIFT

SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication) is not a payment network like ACH or Fedwire. It is a secure messaging system that banks use to send payment instructions to each other across borders. When an international wire transfer crosses a border, it typically travels through the SWIFT network.

Unlike ACH, which settles domestically in the US, SWIFT payments can originate from any of the 11,000+ financial institutions in 200+ countries connected to the network. This makes it the standard for receiving money from international employers, clients, and family members paying from outside the US banking system.

The main drawback of SWIFT is that payments often pass through one or more intermediary (correspondent) banks on the way to the destination. Each intermediary may deduct a fee from the payment in transit. This means the recipient can receive less than the original amount sent, and the sender cannot predict exactly how much will be deducted. Transfers typically take 1 to 5 business days, depending on the number of intermediary banks and time zones involved.

Grey receives SWIFT transfers with a $25 flat fee per incoming payment. If you are receiving a large wire via SWIFT, confirm the fee in your Grey app before asking your sender to initiate the transfer.

Which payment method should you ask for?

Ask for ACH when

  • Your sender is a US employer, freelance platform, or marketplace (Upwork, Fiverr, Amazon, Deel, Remote, Payoneer)
  • Speed is not critical, and 1 to 2 business days is acceptable
  • You want the lowest receiving fee as a percentage of the amount

Ask for FedNow when

  • Your sender's bank supports FedNow, and you need the money to arrive instantly
  • You do not want to wait for ACH batch processing, same fee, much faster
  • You are not sure whether to specify it: if the sender's bank supports it, it may happen automatically

Ask for Fedwire when

  • You need same-day settlement and cannot wait 1 to 2 business days
  • The amount is large enough that the flat fee is a small percentage of the total
  • Remember to share your Fedwire routing number, not the ACH number

Expect SWIFT when

  • The sender is paying from a bank outside the US, a client in Europe, Canada, or elsewhere
  • The sender's US bank does not support ACH or Fedwire to your account
  • You are receiving a large international business payment where SWIFT is the standard

Which routing number to share, and where to find it

Your Grey USD account has two routing numbers. Getting this right is the single most common point of confusion:

If your sender is using Share this Notes
ACH ACH routing number Used by most US employers and platforms by default
FedNow ACH routing number Same number as ACH; FedNow uses the same routing infrastructure
Fedwire Fedwire routing number Different from the ACH number; confirm with your sender which method they are using
SWIFT SWIFT/BIC code + account number For international senders outside the US banking system

Find both routing numbers and all your USD account details in the Grey app under your USD wallet > Account details. If you are unsure which routing number to use, check with Grey support before asking your sender to initiate the transfer; a misdirected wire may take days to trace and return. For more on receiving USD from a US account, see our guide to sending money.

What to do if your USD payment has not arrived

  • ACH: If the payment has not arrived after 2 business days, contact Grey support with the transfer amount, sender name, expected date, and any reference number the sender can provide
  • FedNow: should arrive within seconds. If it has not arrived within a few minutes, contact Grey support
  • Fedwire: If the payment has not arrived by the end of business on the day it was sent, contact Grey support
  • SWIFT: allow the full 1-5 business days before escalating. When contacting support, have the SWIFT reference or MT103 number from your sender, as this is the most useful document for tracing international wires

Frequently asked questions

What is an ACH transfer?

ACH (Automated Clearing House) is the standard US electronic payment network used by most employers and platforms for payroll and payouts. ACH transfers to your Grey account take 1 to 2 business days and carry a percentage deposit fee.

What is FedNow?

FedNow is the Federal Reserve's instant payment system, launched in 2023. It settles payments in real time around the clock. Grey supports receiving USD via FedNow at the same rate as ACH. Whether your payment uses FedNow depends on whether your sender's bank has joined the network.

What is a Fedwire transfer?

Fedwire is a same-day wire transfer system operated by the Federal Reserve, used for large or time-critical US domestic payments. It carries a flat receiving fee on Grey and requires a different routing number from ACH.

What is SWIFT?

SWIFT is the international messaging network that banks use to send payment instructions to each other across borders. It is the standard for receiving international wires from senders outside the US banking system. SWIFT payments take 1 to 5 business days and may be reduced by intermediary bank fees in transit.

Does Grey have two different routing numbers?

Yes. Your Grey USD account includes an ACH routing number (used for ACH and FedNow) and a Fedwire routing number (used for same-day wire transfers). Find both in the Grey app under your USD wallet, Account details. Sharing the wrong one for the wrong method is the most common cause of payment delays.

Which routing number should I give to Upwork, Fiverr, or my employer?

For platform payouts and employer payroll, share your ACH routing number. These platforms use ACH by default. Confirm in your Grey app which number this is before submitting to a new platform.

What happens if an ACH payment is returned?

ACH payments are returned by the sending bank if the account details are incorrect, the name on the payment does not match the account, or the sender's account has restrictions. Grey will notify you of any return, and the funds will be returned to the sender within 1 to 3 business days.

How to Pay for ChatGPT Plus in Nigeria

•

•

2 min read

How to get a virtual dollar card in Nigeria

•

•

2 min read

If you live in Nigeria and regularly pay for international services, you already know the problem. Naira cards come with monthly spending limits on international platforms. Some platforms do not accept them at all. Whether you are paying for subscriptions, buying software, or settling invoices with international clients, a naira card is often not enough.

A virtual dollar card solves this. It gives you a card funded in USD that works on global platforms, without needing a US bank account or a physical card. This guide explains what a virtual dollar card is, what to look for when choosing one, and exactly how to get and activate a Grey virtual dollar card in Nigeria.

What is a virtual dollar card?

A virtual dollar card is a digital payment card linked to a US dollar balance. It has a card number, expiry date, and CVV, just like a physical card, but exists only in an app. You use it to make purchases online, pay for subscriptions, and transact with international merchants, without ever needing a physical piece of plastic.

The key difference from a naira card is what it is denominated in. When you pay on an international platform with a virtual dollar card, the transaction is processed in USD. There are no currency conversion issues at the point of payment, and there are no monthly international spending caps tied to your naira account.

Why Nigerians need a virtual dollar card

Naira cards are useful for local transactions, but they have real limitations for international spending. The Central Bank of Nigeria sets monthly international spending limits on naira-denominated cards. These limits vary, but they can make it difficult or impossible to maintain consistent international subscriptions or pay for higher-cost services.

Beyond the limit issue, some international platforms have historically had friction in processing Naira card payments. A virtual dollar card removes this friction. Because the card is funded and processed in USD, the transaction looks and behaves like any other dollar payment to the merchant.

Common use cases for Nigerians with virtual dollar cards include:

  • Paying for streaming services such as Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube Premium
  • Buying software licenses and SaaS tools
  • Paying for cloud storage, hosting, and developer platforms
  • Subscribing to online courses and educational platforms
  • Receiving and settling invoices on freelance platforms such as Upwork, Fiverr, and Toptal
  • Shopping on international e-commerce platforms
  • Paying for advertising on Meta, Google, and other international ad platforms

What to look for in a virtual dollar card

Not all virtual dollar cards work the same way. Before you choose one, there are a few things worth comparing.

Card network

Virtual dollar cards run on either Visa or Mastercard. Both are accepted on virtually all major international platforms. Visa has slightly broader acceptance on some US-based merchant platforms. Check which network your card runs on before you sign up, as a small number of platforms only accept one or the other.

Creation fee

Some providers charge a one-time fee to create your virtual card. This is separate from any funding or top-up charges. Make sure you understand the full cost of getting the card before you commit. Some providers market cards as free, but charge for activation or funding.

FX and spending fees

If you use your virtual dollar card to pay on a platform that processes in a currency other than USD, you will typically be charged a foreign exchange fee. This fee is usually a percentage of the transaction amount, sometimes with a fixed component. For USD-denominated platforms, this fee does not apply. Knowing this in advance lets you avoid it by choosing where to use each card.

Funding requirements

Check the minimum balance required to activate and maintain the card. Some providers require you to hold a minimum USD balance before you can create a card. Factor this into your decision, along with the creation fee.

Supported platforms and restrictions

Most virtual dollar cards work on the vast majority of international platforms. However, some providers place category restrictions on certain merchant types. If you have a specific platform in mind, confirm that the card is accepted there before signing up.

ATM withdrawal support

Virtual cards are designed for online transactions. They do not support ATM withdrawals. If you need to withdraw cash, you will need a physical card from a different provider. This is a fundamental characteristic of virtual cards, not a limitation specific to any one provider.

How to get a Grey virtual dollar card in Nigeria: step by step

Grey offers a virtual Visa card funded from your USD balance. Here is exactly how to get one.

Step 1: Download the Grey app and create your account

Download the Grey app from the App Store or Google Play. Open the app and tap Create Account. Enter your email address and create a secure password. Grey is available to Nigerian residents.

Step 2: Complete identity verification

Grey is a regulated platform and requires identity verification before you can access full account features. You will need to provide your Bank Verification Number (BVN) and a valid government-issued ID, such as your national identity card, passport, or driver's license. Verification is completed in-app and typically takes a short time to process.

Step 3: Fund your USD wallet

To create a virtual dollar card, you need at least $5 in your Grey USD wallet. You can fund your USD wallet by transferring from your naira account via your Grey account’s local USD funding options, or by receiving a USD transfer from another Grey user or an external USD account.

Step 4: Navigate to Cards in the app

Once your USD wallet has at least $5, go to the Cards section of the Grey app. Tap Create Card and select a USD virtual card.

Step 5: Review and confirm the fees

Before your card is created, Grey will show you the full cost upfront. The fees are:

  • $4 one-time card creation fee
  • $1 deducted from your USD balance as the initial card funding

Both charges are shown clearly before you confirm. You will not be surprised by hidden fees after the fact. Once you confirm, the fees are deducted, and your card is created.

Step 6: Start using your card immediately

Your virtual card details are available immediately after creation. You will see your card number, expiry date, and CVV in the app. You can use these details right away to make purchases on any platform that accepts Visa payments.

What does a Grey virtual dollar card cost?

Here is the full fee breakdown, so there are no surprises.

Fee type Amount
Card creation fee $4, charged once at the time of card creation
Initial funding deduction $1 deducted from your USD balance
Monthly fee None
Minimum USD balance required $5 before card creation
FX fee on non-USD transactions 2% of the transaction amount + $0.50, applied when a merchant processes your payment in a currency other than USD. Avoidable by using USD-denominated platforms.

The FX fee applies only when you use your USD card on a platform that processes payments in another currency. For US-based platforms and services priced in USD, the fee does not apply. Most international subscriptions and SaaS platforms process in USD by default.

What can you use a Grey virtual dollar card for?

Your Grey virtual dollar card works on any platform that accepts Visa. Some of the most common uses include:

  • International streaming services: Netflix, Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Premium
  • Cloud platforms: AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure

  • Online education: Coursera, Udemy, LinkedIn Learning
  • Domain and hosting services: Namecheap, GoDaddy, Cloudflare, DigitalOcean

One thing to note: the Grey virtual card is for online payments only. It does not support ATM cash withdrawals. If you need physical cash in USD, you will need a separate arrangement.

Grey virtual card vs Naira card: what is the difference?

Card type Virtual (online only) Physical or virtual
Card network Visa Varies by bank

Best for International online payments Local and some international spend

Frequently asked questions

Is a Grey virtual dollar card free?

No. Grey charges a $4 one-time fee to create your virtual card, plus a $1 deduction from your USD balance as the initial card funding. There is no monthly fee after that. You need at least $5 in your USD wallet before you can create the card.

Can I use a Grey virtual dollar card on Amazon Nigeria?

Yes. Amazon accepts Visa cards, and the Grey virtual dollar card is a Visa card. When shopping on Amazon.com or international storefronts, transactions are processed in USD, so no FX fee applies. For Amazon's local storefronts that price in other currencies, the 2% + $0.50 FX fee applies.

Can I use my virtual dollar card to withdraw from an ATM?

No. Virtual cards are for online payments only. They do not have physical card details that can be read by an ATM, and they are not linked to a physical card. If you need to withdraw cash, you will need a separate physical card.

Is Grey available in Nigeria?

Yes. Grey is fully available in Nigeria. You can download the app, create an account, complete identity verification using your BVN and a valid Nigerian ID, and start using your multi-currency account, including your virtual dollar card.

What is the spending limit on a Grey virtual dollar card?

Grey sets spending limits based on account verification level and card usage. Check the Grey app or Grey's support center for current limits. Unlike naira cards, there is no CBN-imposed monthly international spending cap on your Grey USD card.

What happens if my card details are compromised?

Because Grey's card is virtual, your card details exist only in the app. You can delete a compromised card and create a new one through the app. Your underlying USD balance is separate from the card details and is not affected.

Common mistakes to avoid with your virtual dollar card

Getting the card is the easy part. The following mistakes are the ones that cost people money or cause transactions to be declined.

Using your USD card on sterling or naira-priced platforms

If you use your Grey USD card to pay on a platform that prices in GBP or NGN, the 2% + $0.50 FX fee applies. This is avoidable. For Nigerian platforms priced in naira, use a naira payment method. For UK-priced services, use your GBP wallet and a GBP card if you have one. Reserve your USD card for USD-denominated platforms, where it performs best with no FX costs.

Not having enough balance for both the creation fee and the first payment

The card creation fee deducts $4, and the initial funding fee deducts $1, totaling $5 from your USD wallet. If you fund exactly $5 and create the card, your available balance after creation is $0. You need to fund above $5 before creating the card if you want to make a payment immediately after.

Entering card details on unfamiliar sites

Your Grey virtual card details are as sensitive as any other card details. Only enter them on platforms you trust. If a site looks unfamiliar or asks for your card number via email or chat, do not use it. Grey cannot reverse transactions made to fraudulent merchants. If you are unsure about a platform, create a separate virtual card with a small balance specifically for that transaction.

Expecting the card to work at ATMs

This is the most common point of confusion. Virtual cards have no magnetic strip, no chip, and no physical presence. They cannot be inserted into or tapped at ATMs. If you need cash while abroad or locally, you will need a physical card from a separate provider.

Forgetting to check the merchant's processing currency

Some international platforms process in local currency even if they are priced in USD. For example, a platform based in the EU may display prices in USD but process your card in EUR. In that case, the FX fee applies even though the price is shown in dollars. If a platform processes in USD, there is no fee. When in doubt, check the platform's billing terms or test with a small charge first.

How to fund your Grey USD wallet

FIRC, taxes and compliance for Indians earning foreign currency

Indians earning foreign currency from remote work, international businesses, content creation, and so on often face additional regulations than those earning locally. These regulations can be tricky to navigate, especially for newbies. Many risk regulatory infringements, withheld payments, or paying the wrong tax. This article explores FIRC, taxes, and compliance for Indians earning in foreign currencies.

What is FIRC, and why does it matter?

A Foreign Inward Remittance Certificate (FIRC) is an official document issued by Authorised Dealers (ADs), which may be banks or authorised payment providers, confirming that funds received in India originated abroad. It serves as a verifiable record of the transaction, including details like

  • The Unique Transaction Reference (UTR) number
  • The remitted amount in foreign currency
  • The INR equivalent
  • The exchange rate
  • A purpose code
  • Other details, including the date, sender, and recipient information

Since 2016, most ADs issue electronic versions (e-FIRC) and not a physical document. The e-FIRC is digitally signed and sent to the RBI's Export Data Processing and Monitoring System (EDPMS).

Indians earning foreign currency require an FIRC because it proves their income is legitimate. It is also essential for audit, regulatory, and tax purposes. However, you might not need an FIRC for every single foreign payment you get. FIRCs are often requested during GST audits or by banks when clarifying the nature of inflows. Businesses claiming GST export benefits or LUT exemptions almost always need them.

If you are a remote worker receiving large or irregular foreign payments, banks may request an FIRC to correctly classify the payment under RBI guidelines. You might also need it when applying for loans, visas, or financial products as credible income proof.

How do you get your FIRC?

Obtaining an FIRC is straightforward. It is usually issued by the payment platform you are using.

  • Get your foreign currency payment in your Indian bank account.
  • Retrieve the transaction information, including the sender’s name and address, your account number, UTR (Unique Transaction Reference) number, amount, date, and the specific Purpose Code.
  • Apply to your bank (through their portal, branch, or app) for the FIRC/FIRA.
  • Your bank will review the details and upload the payment info to the government's EDPMS.
  • The bank then issues the FIRC/FIRA, often digitally, usually within a few days to a few weeks.

Taxation for Indians earning foreign currencies

Paying taxes on foreign income in India mostly depends on your residency status. If you are earning globally in foreign currencies as an Indian resident, you are required to pay taxes. If you are a non-resident Indian (NRI), only the income you make in India is taxable. Entirely foreign-sourced income is usually exempt from taxation.

Foreign earnings must be converted into INR for tax filing. The conversion is done using the RBI reference rate or notified rates, and not the rate you converted at. It is important to make this distinction because your tax obligation may be slightly different from the INR you actually got. Don’t get confused, this is completely normal and legally accepted.

Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA)

India has DTAAs with over 90 countries to prevent the same income from being taxed twice. So, if you are already paying taxes in any of those countries, you can apply to avoid paying taxes on the same income. To claim DTAA benefits, you must:

2 min read

While many remote workers recognise the appeal of working from Morocco, many remain uncertain about which city to live in. To a large extent, choosing the right city can make or mar your experience. Rabat, Casablanca, and Marrakech all offer reliable digital infrastructure, but they suit very different working styles and lifestyles. This article breaks down what each city is really like for remote work, so you can decide which one fits you best.

Remote work in Rabat for people who like it calm

Rabat is Morocco’s political capital and one of its most livable cities. It is quieter, more organised, and less chaotic than Casablanca or Marrakech and appeals to remote workers who value focus and routine.

Internet quality in Rabat is generally reliable, with fibre connections common in residential areas. There are coworking spaces across the city, including Syllabus, AI hub, La Station, and Work Studio. While Rabat seems smaller and more professional than social. The cafés are work-friendly, and you will find excellent options in neighbourhoods like Agdal and Hay Riad.

Rabat offers a slower pace of life, access to the coast, strong public services, and fewer tourists. If you are looking for a buzzing city with a vibrant nightlife, Rabat might not be the best place for you.

Remote work in Casablanca for business opportunities

Casablanca is Morocco’s economic centre. It has the most developed business infrastructure, many coworking spaces, and strong internet reliability. Power cuts are rare, and you get easy access to international services. Remote work in Casablanca opens you up to more business opportunities.

However, Casablanca doesn’t offer much in terms of serenity. It is busy, noisy, and more expensive than other Moroccan cities. The lifestyle is closer to that of a large working city than to a cultural retreat. Traffic and commuting can also become draining if you choose the wrong neighbourhood.

Remote work in Marrakech if you value community

Marrakech is Morocco’s most popular city for digital nomads and for many good reasons. The city seems to have a creative energy that many remote workers and digital nomads have come to love. You can work from riads, exquisite cafés or convenience coworking spaces in areas like Gueliz. Living in the medina is excellent if you enjoy cultural immersion. Internet quality is generally good, though it can vary more than in Casablanca, making a backup SIM essential.

However, Marrakech can be very busy and crowded with tourists during peak season, which can feel overwhelming. This also affects the cost of living, as rent and other expenses may increase during tourist influxes.

Marrakech is generally an excellent place for remote workers and digital nomads who enjoy interacting, networking, and joining communities.

Which remote-friendly Moroccan city should you choose?

There is no single “best” city for remote work in Morocco. It all depends on the kind of life you imagine for yourself. If you want a calm city that is easy to live in, Rabat is an excellent choice compared to Casablanca and Marrakech, which are relatively busy.

Casablanca offers remote workers the best digital infrastructure to support their remote work. On the other hand, Marrakech is popular for inspiring creativity, nurturing community, and vibrant surroundings. Some remote workers actually rotate between cities depending on their needs.

How remote workers manage international payments in Morocco

Morocco is well-suited for remote work, but your city choice shapes your overall experience. Choosing the right city is less about popularity and more about understanding how you work best. One other thing you should understand is how to manage your income efficiently to avoid getting stranded or losing too much to unfair rates and high charges.
