Digital media platforms like YouTube and TikTok offer creators an opportunity to monetise their content and creativity. From YouTube’s Google AdSense to TikTok’s Creator Rewards Program, LIVE Gifts, and subscriptions, US creators can still make money when they are abroad. The main challenge is learning how to receive payments safely, cheaply, and in a currency that works for your new country of residence.

This guide explains how US creators get paid abroad and the payment options available to them.

How YouTube payments work for US creators

YouTube channels are monetised through Google AdSense, which manages payouts from the revenue Google generates from YouTube ads. A US creator must be in the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) to earn ad revenue. This typically requires meeting specific subscriber and watch-hour milestones. Then you must link an AdSense account to your YouTube channel. AdSense will let you withdraw your money once you’ve earned up to $100. Payments are typically made via direct deposit to a bank account. A US creator can use a US bank account or a supported foreign bank account.

YouTube pays 55% of ad revenue (68% of YouTube Premium revenue), 70% of channel memberships, and 70% of Super Thanks/Super Chat/Stickers.

  • Payment threshold: USD 100
  • Payment schedule: Monthly, between the 21st–26th (earnings from previous month)
  • Primary payment methods for US creators:
  1. ACH direct deposit (EFT): This is usually free to any US bank account but takes 1–3 business days. This is what the majority of US creators use.
  2. Hyperwallet: Since Google doesn’t allow creators to link PayPal directly. You add a payment method via Hyperwallet in your AdSense account and use your PayPal email address.
  3. Wire transfer: This is usually recommended for very large amounts and non-US banks. It is slow and quite pricey.
  4. Cheques: You can receive payments from AdSense by cheque, but this option may not be available in all countries. The cheque is mailed, so it is usually slow.

While these options might work well for creators in the US, once you are abroad, the reality changes. Even if your payout option is supported, you have to withdraw to a local bank account if you are going to spend it locally. This means you have to find a payout option that supports local spending or withdrawals to a local bank account at fair rates, without eroding your earnings.

How TikTok payments work for US creators

US creators can join the Creator Rewards Program if they reside in an eligible country. This program pays based on views and engagement for videos longer than one minute. Payouts from the Creator Rewards Program are typically handled via PayPal, Zelle, or direct bank deposit.

TikTok also offers other revenue streams for creators, including LIVE Gifts, subscriptions, and the TikTok Shop (for selling products). TikTok pays roughly $0.02–$0.04 per 1,000 qualified views in the Rewards Program, plus 50% of LIVE Gifts, and 100% of Tips.

  • Payment threshold: USD 10 (Rewards), USD 50 (some bonuses)
  • Payment schedule: Weekly or on-demand (most creators withdraw weekly)
  • Payment methods for US creators (2025):
    • PayPal: This is the most popular option. Payout can be instant or take a couple of days. However, fees are high.
    • ACH direct bank transfer: TikTok can transfer your payout straight into a US checking account. This typically takes 3–5 business days.
    • Zelle – Fastest for US bank accounts (same-day in many cases).

But you see, if you are abroad, ACH and Zelle won’t work without a USD account, and PayPal is limited in certain regions. With these restrictions, US creators need to find reliable alternatives to receive

Receiving payments from YouTube and TikTok abroad

Receiving YouTube or TikTok payments abroad requires more planning than receiving them domestically. The best approach is to choose a payout platform that gives you full control over your earnings, especially if you need to hold USD, avoid unnecessary conversion fees, or transfer money internationally at competitive rates. Grey does this flawlessly, while still offering GBP and EUR accounts.
