Malta is an island country located in the central Mediterranean and it’s famous for its incredible history, landscapes, and perfect weather all year round. And with its recently launched digital nomad visa program, you can live there for up to a year with your family.

In this post, we’ll break down everything you need about the nomad visa, the requirements, and the application process.

The Malta Digital Nomad Visa

Malta joined the list of European countries offering nomad visas in 2021 when it launched its digital nomad visa, also called the Nomad Residence Permit (NRP).

The NRP offers temporary residency of foreign remote workers from non-Swiss, non-EU, and non-EEA countries for up to a year. This can, however, be extended if the eligibility requirements are met.

Benefits of living in Malta as a digital nomad

  • It’s tax-free: as a digital nomad in Malta, you’re excluded from paying taxes as you’re already being taxed in your home country. This means you have more financial freedom to spend on new experiences, travel, or even investments. That being said, you’ll need to show evidence that you pay taxes in your home country.
  • Travel freedom: In Malta, you can easily access Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, but that’s not all. With a valid Malta digital nomad visa, you can travel visa-free to countries in the Schengen area for up to 90 days. Some examples of countries belonging to the Schengen area are Germany, Denmark, Finland, Greece, and Switzerland.
  • Good connectivity: Malta is one of the places where you can conveniently work remotely and not worry having stable internet connection as there’s nationwide coverage of 5G network. There are also more than 400 public Wi-Fi spots around the country.
  • You can bring your family: a Malta digital nomad visa allows you to bring your family during your stay.

How to Apply for the Malta Digital Nomad Visa

The entire process is online, and here’s a step-by-step process to guide you:

  • Gather your documents: review your documents to ensure nothing is missing, as this is one of the significant reasons applications are denied.
  • Submit your application: once you’ve filled out the form, submit it online via mail to the Residency Malta Agency.
  • Review: The review process typically takes about 30 days to give room for appropriate background checks
  • Pick up your Nomad Residence Permit (NRP): if your application is approved, you must submit valid health insurance and proof of accommodation within 30 working days. Once you’re able to do this, a final letter of approval will be issued. You should get an email within two weeks asking you to pick up your NRP in person from the Residency Malta offices.
