Payoneer and PayPal alternatives for Indians working with foreign clients

India has one of the largest and fastest-growing freelance workforces in the world, with an increasingly large volume of cross-border payments. Yet, Payoneer and PayPal, which are two of the most popular tools for managing these payments have their limitations. High fees, account restrictions, and unfavourable exchange rates eat into your earnings or disrupt your cash flow.

If you are one of them, this article covers the most reliable alternatives worth considering.

Grey

Grey lets you open virtual USD, EUR, and GBP accounts regardless of where you are based. You receive real account details (routing number, account number, IBAN) that you can share with foreign clients, just like any regular bank account. Payments arrive without the sender needing to navigate international transfer fees, because, from their end, it looks like a domestic payment.

Conversion rates are competitive, fees are transparent before you confirm anything, and withdrawals to your local bank are processed quickly. There are no monthly fees or minimum balance requirements, making it practical whether you are just starting out or already managing a steady stream of international income.

For Indian freelancers who work directly with clients rather than through platforms, Grey offers the kind of professional, clean payment setup that used to require a foreign bank account.

Wise

Wise is one of the most well-regarded alternatives globally, and it works particularly well for Indian freelancers. It gives you local account details in multiple currencies, including USD, GBP, EUR, and others. This means foreign clients can pay you as if they were sending a domestic transfer. Conversion uses the mid-market rate with a small, clearly displayed fee, which is a significant improvement over PayPal's opaque markup model.

Withdrawals to Indian bank accounts are generally reliable, and the platform is fully functional in India. If your priority is transparent pricing and trustworthy currency conversion, Wise is a solid choice.

The limitations are worth noting: Wise is not as deeply integrated with freelance marketplaces as Payoneer is, so if your income comes through Upwork or Fiverr rather than directly from clients, you may find the connection less seamless.

Deel

If you are in a structured remote work arrangement β€” contracted to a foreign company rather than juggling multiple freelance clients β€” Deel is worth looking at seriously. It handles international payroll, contracts, and compliance, and it can deposit directly into your Indian bank account in rupees.

Deel is not built for the classic freelancer model. It suits people in longer-term, employer-contractor relationships where one company is responsible for paying you regularly. For that specific situation, it removes a lot of administrative friction.

Stripe

Stripe is primarily a payment infrastructure product, but Indian freelancers who run independent businesses, such as selling digital products, subscriptions, or services through their own website can use it to accept international card payments.

Stripe became available to Indian businesses in recent years and has expanded its capabilities since then. It is better suited to business owners than to service-based freelancers receiving project payments from clients, but if you are building a product or content business with a global audience, it is worth exploring.

Skrill

Skrill is a digital wallet that supports international transfers and is available in India. It is not the most popular option among Indian freelancers, but it functions as a PayPal alternative for specific use cases β€” particularly if your clients are already on the platform.

Its fees and exchange rates are not significantly better than PayPal in most cases, so it is less a step up and more a sideways move. It is worth knowing it exists, but it should not be the first thing you reach for.
